CPU Too hot!

I have been trying to get past 2.93 GHz in stability tests using OCCT, but it keeps stopping with a cpu too hot message. It also says that it's running at 80*c+ when it stops, but no blue screens or crashes and BIOS reads 35*c - 40*c when at 4.0GHz?

Would a chipset update and BIOS update be needed to fix this? Are there any reported cases out there that have been remidied? I need a fix.

If using OCCT has been outdated now would you say that Prime95 or Intel Burn Test are better. After reading some articles I'm currently under the impression that temps on the 920 i7 are negligable under 100*c max so OCCT would be sending out the error message early don't you think?

Not really sure on temps Squall might have a better idea he has the same CPU if I remember correctly. You can find more info HERE there is a pdf of the technical specs.

On OCCT I haven't used it in a while as it conflicts with CPUID HWmonitor so not really sure how dependable it is anymore. Just a quick reply getting ready for work here Frankie.

Thanks for the quick reply, giving away OCCT. Should I try Prime95?

Also as I found out before that the temps were reasonable for this cpu as there are many others experinces these temps and also the article I found from Intel said that everythings cool. Not worried anymore.

Prime has always been a solid stability test give it a shot Bro.

I have been using TechARP's x264HD and Everest stress test for CPU cooler reviews. The nice thing about Everest for troubleshooting is you can select what components you stress. For example you can stress the cores and cache on the CPU separately ... that's how I found that the L2 cache on the E6550 was limiting my O/C.

I will thanks. Will probably also try everest aswell. I've used it before so no dramas. It's sleek looking.

I have to say now that I installed my xiggy thor's hammer, that temps are now down 10*c so I am very happy with that. Before they were 50+ now under 40.

Ok, thanks. I'm really happy with these temps. Though I would still stay away from running programs like set@home because temps were above 80*c when that was idling in the background.

It's getting close to summer here ATM so I had been running my PC with the side off to let the breeze in. I noticed a few degrees in temperature drop with that. Also cleaned and tidied inside a bit so it's better now. As for OCing recently at 4.0GHz I was not going over 60*c in benchmarks that's with Thor's Hammer running. Can't wait to try water cooling for the first time. You must be really happy with your setup Mac? I can't decide though if I should run the cooler rad facing inside or pushing the air out. On one hand I can have moderate cooling at high overclocks and a reasonably cool case or I could push as hard as the cooer will let me pushing temps inside the case up a bit. I have already decided, but want to know what you think. Thanks

Happy with mine Bro and even thought the H50 installation specifies mounting the fan as intake, I am running 2 fans push/pull exhaust. I found running the fan as intake really increased the chipset and ambient mobo temps.
